End of the road for Man U star?

- ESHLIN VEDAN

THE English Premier League resumes this weekend follWowing the conclusion of the international break.

In news which has rocked the football world, Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood was effectively suspended from the club this week amid allegations of rape and assault of a woman.

The 20-year-old was arrested last weekend after allegations by a woman which also included the release of photographs, video footage and an audio recording.

Greenwood has been suspended from United as police continue their investigations.

Should Greenwood be found guilty, it’s likely that his football career could be over. Greenwood’s sponsor, Nike, have announced that their partnership with him is on hold as they monitor the outcome of the police investigation.

Greenwood is not the first footballer to be implicated in a case involving violence against women in recent times.

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been suspended by his club since August after he was charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The charges related to alleged offences against two girls under the age of 18. Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson has also been suspended by his club since July owing to suspicion of allegedly committing child sexual offences.

While it is good that football clubs and the football world are finally taking action against violence against women and children, it is deeply concerning that action is only being taken in recent times.

It’s unlikely that these offences are only suddenly happening.

They have likely been happening for an extended period, with many getting away scot-free.

Did Newcastle pull off one of the smartest signings of the transfer window?

There have been a number of high profile transfers this month but none have been as strategic as Newcastle United’s signing of Chris Wood from Burnley. The veteran New Zealand international will add much-needed additional firepower to the Magpies’ attack. He was also a key player at bottom of the table Burnley prior to his arrival.

By signing Wood, Newcastle also further weakened a relegation rival in Burnley. The Magpies enter the second half of the season in 18th place on the log and have been

They have also signed England defender Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and marquee signing Bruno Guimarães from Lyon.

The new Newcastle ownership are clearly already making their presence felt. Had former owner Mike Ashley been in charge, they would have certainly not made the signings they have made so far.
