‘Indian’ label offensive

-

IT IS revolting that in this day and age when an establishment labels its customers according to race when presenting the bill.

According to reports, a staff member at the Old Grey Sports Club in Gqerberha referred to a patron as “Indian” on the bill.

Racism is a hydra-headed monster that has humiliated black people since time immemorial. The latest incident is a crude exercise in racism by stealth and deception. It is distasteful and offensive, and this incident is a frequent occurrence in our democracy – without being noticed by the larger society.

The evils of racism will continue to batter our social fabric. If we remain silent, we perpetuate the notion that the display of prejudice does not matter.
