All set for Midmar Mile
FINAL preparations are under way for the first live aQuellé Midmar Mile this week, after the competition was held virtually last year.
Charity events will take place tomorrow and Friday and the main event will be held at the weekend.
Wayne Ridden, the race organiser, said entries would close today.
“In 2020 we had 12 000 registered, and so far we are at 6 000. These numbers are positive and show that we are back,” Ridden said.
“We are thrilled that the aQuellé Midmar Mile can go ahead as planned.
“Obviously, all Covid-19 protocols will be observed and the event will be run according to the extremely high safety standards that swimmers have come to expect over the years. We are also thrilled to welcome back some big names in open water swimming, including our own Olympians for the elite races.”
He said organisers had received confirmation from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, which oversees Midmar Dam, that participants and crew members would not be required to show proof of vaccination nor provide a negative Covid-19 test result at the entrance to the dam.
“While every precaution is being taken to make the event as safe as possible for all those taking part, this decision will make entry to the dam a much smoother process for all involved in the aQuellé Midmar Mile,” said Ridden.
“We still encourage people to get vaccinated when they can, to stay as safe as possible as we continue to fight this pandemic together and look forward to eventually returning to normal life.”
Late entries will be accepted at the dam at a higher fee.
