MEETING MANGESHKAR

DR LUBNA Nadvi, a senior lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, shared a personal memory on her Facebook page of a meeting with Lata Mangeshkar: ‘My late father, who was head of the Arabic, Urdu and Persian department at the former University of Durban-Westville, had great respect for Lata Mangeshkar’s incredible musical talent and her many songs sung in Urdu.

‘When she visited South Africa for the first time in 1991 and paid a visit to the former University of Durban-Westville, we were very fortunate to meet her and have a brief chat.

‘Pictured here is my dad handing Lataji a copy of my first poetry anthology. In the second picture (below), I am in such awe, that I closed my eyes in deep reflection.’
