THE first of what is planned to be a regular women-empowerment motoring event was announced last week.

Heels and Wheels, hosted by radio personality and actress Jayshree Parasuramen, will take place at Suncoast on March 26 and 27.

Dubbed as a fast and furious motoring event, Parasuramen said they aimed to use it to create a platform for skills development for young girls and women who were keen to learn more about the world of motoring.

“Some of the highlights include a world record sound-off competition. This is the first time that we will be attempting to break the world record in South Africa. We will have a Show and Shine competition as well. Saturday’s theme is a Fast and Furious vibe, and one can look out for sports cars on display.

“Sunday is more of the old school classic cars that will be on show. However, you are likely to see both models of cars on any day. There will also be Off-Road Racing and Drifting Tracks and we will have the Nedbank Women’s Awards for Heels and Wheels, recognising women in the industry.”

Parasuramen, the event organiser and head of traffic on East Coast Radio, said the motor show would be a stepping stone to car extravaganzas led by women.

“The IASCA Sound-Off Team and men from the motor industry, as well as car fundis, have been teaching my team and me the skills and helping us with getting more experience for this motor event.

“However, we still need to grow and recognise more women in the motor industry. Hence for this launch event, we have men and women, but the intention is that as we progress annually, we will see more women involved and

showcasing at Heels and Wheels.”

Parasuramen said they had an overwhelming response from car enthusiasts.

“There’s a five-year plan and vision for the growth of this event. Like all things, we start small and certainly have the intention to later move towards racing. For this event, we are showcasing a variety of vehicles and some interesting exhibitors.

“You can expect to see vintage cars, super cars, some race cars, as well as pimped up rides that will be on display. We have encouraged bike clubs to get their female riders to our event or ride in with female crew in the lead. You will definitely spot some strong female riders who are riding from the South Coast to our event.”

In addition to the rides, local female DJs will feature, and awards will be given out to the competitors. There will be stalls for food vendors and exhibitors.

Heels and Wheels takes place at Suncoast Casino Car Park 3. Tickets from R50 for the family event are available on Quicket.co.za
