Good looking then, better now

- VIJAY LALLOO

VIJAY Lalloo still can’t stomach Brussels sprouts from his days in the South African Navy.

Lalloo started out as a shy and hesitant man but the training gave him confidence.

So confident that he described himself as “good looking then and better now”.

Armed with an aptitude for learning he excelled during his compulsory navy training, and also at ML Sultan and Wingfield Naval College, where he studied electrical engineering and electronics.

After a short time at sea on a strike craft, he was assigned to work on decommissioned vessels where the equipment had to be disassembled.

He said he became despondent and the job lost its spark when he was not on an active vessel.

“Being in the navy was a good experience.

“Becoming the top trainee of the class of 77 and then tops at ML Sultan felt good. But afterwards everything became routine,” he said.

Lalloo left the navy to pursue his studies and later joined an IT company where he spent 10 years until it was liquidated.

He is currently a network engineer for an international company.
