Club aims to build on solid foundation

-

WITH the Central Durban Golf Club turning 42 this year, outgoing president Juggie Pillay said at the club’s annual general meeting on the Bluff on Sunday that despite many hiccups and challenges the club was progressing in leaps and bounds.

“There’s been breakaways,” he said. “If your house has a leak, you don’t leave the house and move away. You repair that leak. Like that, we need to pull together and sort out the problems and march forward.”

Pillay called on all clubs to band together for the benefit of all.

“There are many advantages in unity. You become stronger. You can call the shots.

“Then golf will not be a game for the rich and famous. We can negotiate better green fees and play at leading golf courses and attract the novice golfers and the youth.

“Junior golf must be promoted. There must be more competitions and more sponsors must come on board to ensure we attract the best golfers.”

Tony Pillay, who took over the reins, made a bold move by resolving not to increase membership fees for this season. He said he understood the economic climate the country was facing.

“We want to make it affordable to encourage people to come and play golf. We want everyone to feel welcome to our games and our tournaments. This is your club and you need to be fully involved in it.”
