AN ELDERLY couple from Phoenix used buckets to collect and dispose of the water that flooded their home.

Pensioners Bobby Govender, 76, and his wife Ambie, 68, of Greenbury, live alone in a flat.

Govender said he noticed the water level rising in his yard throughout Monday. He said by 9.30pm the water had rushed into their flat through the front door.

“Before we knew it, the water level was just below our knees. We called our children and their partners to help us. They live nearby so they walked in the rain to our home. For two hours, we frantically scooped the water, which we then threw to another area of the yard. Our furniture and kitchen cupboards were damaged.”

He said he and his wife could not sleep that night as they feared further flooding and damage.

Govender said by Tuesday they were still mopping and cleaning the house.

Gareth Naidoo, the spokesperson for KZN VIP Security, said clean-up operations around Phoenix began on Tuesday.

“The heavy rain caused mudslides and trees to fall on some of the main roads. Homes, vehicles and boundary walls were also damaged.”
