Dramatic rescue as river floods home

- NADIA KHAN nadia.khan@inl.co.za

A FAMILY in Riverhorse Valley were rescued after a river burst its banks and water flowed into their home on Monday night.

Apsra Panchoo, 46, of Prince Mhlangane Road, said her dad, 86, mom, 73, son, 15, and a relative, 55, were carried out of their property as the water rose to chest level. She said their home was adjacent to the Umhlangane River.

“There was a sudden gush of water into our property when a concrete fence behind our home was broken by rubble from the neighbouring business. We had no escape as the water reached waist level outside and was entering our home.”

Panchoo said she had posted a video on community chat groups to ask for help.

“We were left with no option as all the emergency services were unavailable due to innumerable rescue needs in KZN.

“I posted the videos and God sent angels from our family as well as community members came to our aid.

“They broke through all the barriers in our fenced yard to get to us. At that stage, the water had reached chest level. They carried my dad, who is asthmatic, over their shoulders to safety on the higher ground.

“We cried when we got to safety. However, we were left with absolutely nothing because the entire house with all its contents were destroyed. Our cars were floating on the water.”

Panchoo said they had to make temporary arrangements for accommodation.

“We are trying to find our feet during this traumatic time. We are not yet stable enough to think of what to do next, and have nothing left.

“However, we are grateful to all those

who risked their lives to save ours and are forever indebted to them and the

family and community for their selfless support and blessings,” she said.
