Saved by the hand of God

KIM Davis, a single mother of four, lost everything after her home in Mariannridge washed away, but she remains unshaken.

She is grateful her son’s life was spared after the house they had lived in for 15 years collapsed while he was inside.

“On Monday, a boundary wall collapsed on to Delron’s car. Then my neighbour’s house, which is situated on a bank, collapsed and crashed into our wendy house. The wendy house then slammed into our home and the building caved in.”

She said Delron somehow managed to escape. “When I asked him how he was able to get out of the wreckage, he said God rescued him. He said God took him by the hand and pulled him out of the house. Nobody else was in the house at the time.”

Delron sought help from a neighbour and called his dad. He was taken to hospital.

“Thankfully, my daughters (aged 20 and 15) were not at home. They went to check on their uncle after his wendy house also caved in. But he is fine.”

Davis said she was at King Edward VIII Hospital at the time with her 5-yearold son who is autistic.

She said Delron sustained head injuries and had almost lost an eye.

“His arms and legs were injured and his back, shoulder and feet were also hurt. He was vomiting blood and it also came out of his ears and nose. Fortunately, he recovered and was discharged the following day.”

But there was no home to go back to. “Nothing was spared. Our identity documents and bank cards are all gone.”

She said members from the community had found them temporary accommodation.

“The place is still under construction. There are no toilets, electricity or water. The family is supplying us with water but we currently don’t have food so that is a struggle.”

Davis is staying with three of her children, while Delron is living with his grandparents. “My house and everything in it is immaterial. I know God will restore but my child’s life is more important. My child is here because of God.”
