-

CHATSWORTH attorney Shireen Soobrathi and her daughters Azaria and Za shone at the recent Karate South Africa (KSA) National event in Bloemfontein, going on to achieve their Protea colours.

Soobrathi who was recently appointed as the first female chairperson of the Chatsworth Small Claims Court, took up karate after being inspired by her daughters.

Her husband Leon Pillay who is also an attorney regularly attends events to support his wife and daughter.

“I felt the urge to join Azaria and Zia on the dojo karate floor as it just didn’t make sense for me to be a mere spectator when I could be a part of the action. After joining my daughters

“I have never looked back. I firmly believe that our Karate practices enable us to spend time together.

“We thoroughly enjoy the karate vibe both in daily practice and when a tournament opportunity arises.,” said Soobrathi.

The elder sibling Zia, a grade 10 student at the Durban High School, said the sport was full of adventure.

“We are on a permanent road show as we trot to different cities and provinces in pursuit of the elusive tournament gold medal,” she said.

President of KSA Sonny Pillay paid tribute to the family for their dedication to karate.

“They are a very talented sports family and are making strides in the field. All ladies karate champions are role models especially given the scourge of gender based violence that has gripped our country,” said Pillay.

Karate coach Brando Pillay said that he expected the family to win gold medals at the upcoming Africa Region 5 Championships that will be held in Durban.
