THE season for municipal rates rebate applications and renewals has begun. To assist pensioners to apply for or renew their applications for rebates, POST spoke to the municipality to get more clarity on the process.

Msawakhe Mayisela, the spokesperson for the City, said property owners who receive a rates rebate are reminded that their rebate renewal forms are due on April 30. He explained how rebates are granted.

“The eThekwini Municipality, in terms of the criteria set out in the Rates Policy, may exempt a specific category of owners of properties, or the owners of a specific category of properties, from the payment of a rate levied on their property. The municipality may also grant a rebate on, or a reduction in, the rates payable.”

Mayisela said the rates rebate that these categories of property owners currently received was subject to annual review and approval by the municipality.

“To continue to receive this rebate for the 2023/24 financial year, the form must be signed in the presence of a commissioner of oaths, and submitted to your nearest Sizakala Centre or municipal office. The forms can also be emailed to

“An SMS will be sent to the number provided, advising the customer of the status of the application. If the number has changed, the new number must be provided on the renewal form. In addition to the SMS, a message will appear on the owner’s next bill after the renewal has been processed.”

He said rebate renewals were no longer given automatically, and that completed forms should be handed in accordingly.
