Top tips and tricks to hook the many summer fish around – safely

-

THE bigger seas have made for “interesting” days on the water for our offshore anglers. Nobody likes a wet launch in the morning, so take care and don’t rush to launch. The KZN coast has seen plenty of fish so get out there and get the drags screaming.

The North Coast has been throwing some spicy launches at the more shorebreak dominant launch sites. Guys, always be careful and don’t launch if you have hesitations.

The snoek have gone a bit quiet but the influx of coloured river water after the recent rains should see some good colour lines which are prime snoek hunting grounds. Look at fishing both the dirty water and clean water side of the colour line.

The deeper reefs and pinnacles have been very productive for the bottom fishing commercials. The rockcod and geelbek landed have been impressive.

The Durban section of our coast has seen a lot more launches due to the lack of a massive shore break at most sites. Much like in the north, the snoek should come on the bite again off Blue Lagoon with the strong flow of the river. Work the colour line with small spoons while trolling a lipped lure.

The dorado have continued on the bite. Trolling skirted lures at speed has accounted for most catches but any flotsam in the deeper water will attract the dorries. Throw a live bait or popper in the general area of the floating debris. If the dorries are there, they will eat!

The summer season is going very well for our shore anglers and we have seen some phenomenal sandies and other inedibles caught already.

The North Coast has seen a large majority of the bigger inedibles. The sandsharks have been the most soughtafter of the summer fish with most anglers trying for the magic 2m mark fish. Some anglers avoided this and went well past … The sandy is a tricky fish to keep hooked, but once hooked he is a fantastic fighter. Mackerel, redeye and shad are the baits of choice.

The central coast has been quiet, other than the basin area. This section of beach is fishable in most water conditions and does not stop producing fish. The diamonds and grey sharks have been the main species coming out, but the odd sandy and honeycomb does make it on to the catch lists. The same baits as mentioned above will produce fish. The hardest part is getting the bait, at the moment.

The South Coast has been a mixed area with both inedibles and edibles landed. The rocky points have been the place to go for the inedibles, with most of the regular spots producing. These areas are best fished with heavier tackle and a strong back. Don’t let the fish cut you off. Full metal traces and quality hooks are called for.

Tight lines and screaming reels!
