A WEEK before Mother’s Day, Andre Craig Ezra, the eldest son in his family, was stabbed and killed – allegedly by a girlfriend.

The 22-year-old man, from Sunford in Phoenix, allegedly spent the weekend with the woman.

His father, Ashley Ezra, said on May 7, he called to find out when his son would return home, but was instead told that his son had been stabbed.

“He was stabbed on Sunday afternoon. I called him at 5.30 pm that day. He told me he was on his way home and that he was waiting for transport. I then phoned him at 6.45pm. His girlfriend answered the phone. She repeatedly said, ‘Come, uncle Ashley, Andre is stabbed’.

“I went to her house and found him in a pool of blood.

“I rushed him to Mount Edgecombe Hospital, where the doctors had to drain his punctured lungs, which were filling up with blood.

“At around 1am, we had to have him transferred to Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme Hospital, where doctors were able to stabilise him by 4am.

“When we left, he was fine. Around 8am, I was told that an emergency surgery needed to be done. Later that morning, the doctor called and said my son only had a 30% chance of coming out of the hospital with a full recovery. An hour later, they called to say my son did not make it.”

Ashley said he did not know exactly why his son had been stabbed.

“There is a lot of speculation at this stage. We are just allowing the police to investigate so we can get the answers.”

He said Mother’s Day on Sunday had been difficult.

“My wife is beside herself. She is inconsolable. To lose her eldest child, her only son, is heartbreaking.”

Ezra’s funeral took place at his home in Brayford Avenue before proceeding to the Clare Estate Crematorium.

KZN SAPS said Phoenix police were investigating a murder case.
