We must stop living in denial

- DHAYALAN MOODLEY Mobeni Heights

THANK you Narend Singh for your comments about bringing back the death penalty, in the article, “Trusted uncle who sold sweets allegedly raped, killed girl (9)”, the POST, March 27-31.

The brutal murder of young Lusanda Nkomo has sent shock waves throughout the South Coast. We are encountering the most uncertain times of our lives with the number of children being raped and murdered.

Reading this article and various other crime related stories in the POST made a part of me die. I never thought this type of crime would happen in our rainbow nation. Our forefathers will be turning in their graves. These murders and rape, especially of children, have evoked extreme anger in all law abiding citizens.

We, as South Africans must stop living in denial. We must admit our country has taken a plunge into the world of darkness. Serious crimes have reached unacceptable levels. My appeal to most of the people in the country is that we should bring back the death penalty for serious crimes.

I am sure once this is implemented business will be booming and life will be back to normal. Most

Islamic countries have the death penalty and crime is zero. Society has a moral obligation to protect the safety and welfare of its citizens. My belief is that by putting murderers to death, society can ensure that convicted killers do not harm and kill again.

Please, Mr Singh, my appeal is that the death penalty should be reinstated and save South Africa from criminals. I am positive you will have the majority of law-abiding citizens supporting you.
