Srikanth
FILM-MAKER Tushar Hiranandani crafts a simplistic biopic, based on the true story of Srikanth Bolla – prominent Indian industrialist and founder chairperson of Bollant Industries.
Born to a poor family in Adhra Pradesh, India, visually-impaired Srikanth (Arnav Abdagire/Rajkummar Rao) was a boon and disappointment to his parents.
As a “special” learner in school, he managed to impress his teacher Devika (Jyothika), who motivated him to achieve great things in life.
He enrolled at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology on a scholarship and set up his own business with the help of a generous investor Ravi (Sharad Kelkar).
The endearing story is one of the strongest points in the film, creating an emotional experience for the viewer.
As the journey of Srikanth unfolds, the story also boldly exposes the biases that exist in the education system and lack of job opportunities for people with disabilities.
While all this is purposefully written into the screenplay, the writers avoid exploring certain crucial episodes in-depth.
They instead opt to style the screenplay as a “highlight reel”, including only the important parts for the 134-minute film.
It is a delight to watch highly-skilled actor Rao take on the challenging lead role.
The character requires physical involvement and Rao surrenders with sterling effort.
He makes a convincing Srikanth for screen by perfecting the nuances and mannerisms, keeping his act simple and natural.
It is through his performance that the viewer gets emotionally drawn into Bolla’s life.
There are substantial performances from Jyothika, Sharad Kelkar and Alaya F.
Srikanth may not be Bollywood’s best biopic but it leaves a lasting impression.
It stands out for giving the audience a perfect blend of emotions from start to finish, and Rao’s noteworthy performance.
