Calling Doctor Perumal
FORENSIC pathologist Dr Reggie Perumal has provided his expertise at a number of horrific crime scenes in the country.
His most recent work with the defence team for murder accused Oscar Pistorius adds to the highlights of his impressive career.
Speaking from the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Tuesday) before Pistorious’s bail application got underway, Perumal said his passion for forensics was so great that he was determined to succeed.
“Back in the apartheid days it was not easy for me to enter crime scenes especially in matters concerning high profile individuals.
“As a forensic pathologist access to crime scenes is vital and you can imagine the frustration I experiencesd back then,’’ said Perumal.
Concerning the Pistorious investigations he said ‘investigations were progressing’.
“One can’t say that investigations have been wrapped up.
“That is because I have to be prepared to look at all possibilities,’’ he said.
Several years ago he was roped in to represent triple murder accused and Pakistani national Waseem Agha in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Agha was acquitted by retired Judge Jan Hugo of fatally shooting his wife, Aneesa, their baby Zil and his father-in-law and teacher Anand Sukan.
The State alleged Agha had hired his former driver, Bonginkosi David Ndlovu, to carry out the triple hit at their home in Reservoir Hills, Durban, in March 2004. Ndlovu too walked free.
