The Man­dela 100 ini­tia­tive, com­mem­o­rat­ing the cen­te­nary of Man­dela’s birth on July 18, was launched at the De­nis Hur­ley Cen­tre re­cently. It’s a call-out to Dur­ban­ites to hon­our Man­dela’s 100 years by find­ing 100 ways of mak­ing the city a bet­ter place in 100 days. Ray­mond Per­rier, the cen­tre’s di­rec­tor, said he wanted peo­ple to think about the many ways in which they could share their time and their goods to help the poor in the city. The cen­tre has created a list of 100 ideas, in­clud­ing work­ing with a per­son with a dis­abil­ity, one-on-one sup­port for young peo­ple, pre­par­ing meals for the home­less, help­ing a refugee child travel to school and adopt­ing a granny or grandpa.
