Triple murder: timeline of events
ON SEPTEMBER 21, Jane Govindasamy, 45, and her daughters, Denisha, 22, and Rackelle, 16, were founded murdered at their Phoenix home. This is how the sequence of events were addressed on social media:
September 21: Phoenix Crime Watch, which is run by the private security company KZN VIP, broke the news of a double murder.
Shortly thereafter, it confirmed a third person was found.
The post garnered 1 110 shares and 651 comments.
September 22: Reports emerged on Facebook that a 45-year-old murder accused, who was known to the family, had been traced and arrested during the evening of September 21.
He was due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on September 25.
September 23: The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, visited the crime scene and met the grieving family.
September 25: The murder suspect appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court to apply for bail.
The case was adjourned. Later that evening, the director of KZN VIP, Glen Naidoo, sent out an urgent appeal to Phoenix residents to stop sharing pictures and videos relating to the crime scene on social media. He said it would compromise the investigation.
September 26: The funeral notice of the mother and her two daughters was posted with many offering their messages of condolences.
September 29: The funeral was held at Faith Revival Centre in Phoenix.
October 3: The accused, identified as Colin Pillay, made his second appearance in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
His case was adjourned to October 11 for a bail application.
