CONGRATULATIONS to the POST.

You have made a brave decision not to follow the herd.

While other publications in the Independent Media group have drastically reduced the number of letters to the editor or even stopped publishing them, like the Independent on Saturday, you went the other way and decided to publish a full page of them.

No reasons were given, leaving us only to speculate why this happened with the new format.

Was it administrative or editorial? Was it a joint decision by all the editors? Or was it a political ploy to get rid of adverse anti-ANC criticism?

Readers’ views are important, no matter how unpalatable they may be.

With dwindling numbers of the reading public, newspapers have to evolve to stay ahead if they wish to compete and survive in the technological (world) where the cellphone is fast replacing the traditional forms of reading. But reducing the number of letters is counter-productive and will not help to increase reader numbers.

There is the danger of newspapers suffering the same fate as the radio, killed by the cellphone.

Congratulations again. I am sure you would have won many supporters among your readers. Let’s hope it’s not a one-off thing and you continue to publish a full page of readers’ views.
