SUBMISSIONS to participate in the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) public hearings into Eskom’s application to increase electricity tariffs annually by 15% closed on Friday.

The hearings will now commence in Cape Town on January 14, and culminate in Johannesburg on February 4. The Durban leg takes place on January 17 at the Durban International Convention Centre from 9am to 5pm.

The application was made to recover revenue of R762 billion over the next three financial years from power users through higher tariffs.

According to Nersa, Eskom’s third multi-year price determination (MYPD3) regulatory clearing account totalled R219bn, R252bn and R291bn for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years respectively.

The 15% annual increase is over and above the 4% Nersa already granted Eskom for 2019 for earlier expenses.
