Calling all Biltong Lovers

Biltong is a South African institution – there is at least one biltong stand in most shopping centres, and what is a braai or gathering to watch rugby without a bowl of biltong to snack on?

In response to this popularity, Biltong Board was created by Sarel van der Walt and Maxime Eon in 2016, a subscription offering for biltong lovers. You visit the Biltong Board website and subscribe to one of their packages. The team at Biltong Board will then select the most delicious range of biltong and send it to you each month.

The menu includes standard beef biltong, snapsticks, and chips, as well as biltong made from kudu, gemsbok, springbok, and eland. Eon sources the biltong from more than 80 farms around South Africa, ensuring that each and every piece reflects the company’s values of the products being of high quality, ethically sourced, innovative, and with no vacuum packing, artificial colourants, or chemicals.

Due to the huge success of the subscription boxes, with thousands of South Africans happily munching on delicious biltong every month, Eon and Van der Walt have decided to expand their biltong empire to brick and mortar with the launch of a physical Biltong Board store and restaurant in Cape Town.

Eon and Van der Walt’s vision is to open the doors to a modern restaurant and bar that showcases the incredible diversity of South African biltong accompanied by local wines and craft beers – a gettogether destination where the primary objective is to make great memories and enjoy incredible food.

After investing both time and money into the development of this vision, the biltong entrepreneurs have turned to crowdfunding to fund the final stages of their project. They have selected crowdfunding not only to raise the funds for this project, but also to validate their concept and make sure that there is a market for their expansion. The two biltong aficionados view crowdfunding as a way to get the crowd involved in their creative process, and build hype around the launch of their store.

Eon and Van der Walt have a vision of a contemporary space with beautiful leather armchairs and French oak tables; state-ofthe-art displays and refrigeration appliances will ensure the finest quality of delicious biltong will be presented to patrons.

A distinctive biltong experience, something more than just the final product, something that will enhance the cured meat industry, is what the Biltong Board restaurant and store will be in the hottest destination in the country, Cape Town, next year.
