Cultural Wonders in Abu Dhabi

I like to think of myself as a rather welltravel­led person – I have spent months exploring Thailand, dived in Cambodia, explored the wilderness in Botswana, river rafted in Zambia, and experience­d history in Europe. And, my travel bucket list is still rather long. However, one place that was never on that list of potential experience­s is the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Whenever I thought of the UAE, images of rolling sand dunes and large shopping malls dominated my mind – not really two of my favourite things. Then, I got the opportunit­y to visit the capital of the UAE – Abu Dhabi.

Often marketed as the “family-friendly version” of Dubai, Abu Dhabi has wealth beyond the glitz of high-rises and designer brand-dominated malls – Abu Dhabi offers a plethora of cultural wonders that will leave you in a sense of awe.

A Grand Place of Worship and Architectu­re

With its tall towers, all white facade, and marble domed roofs dominating the skyline, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the biggest mosque in the UAE, is an Abu Dhabi landmark, and a mosque that is open for all to view its majesty.

Strict, modest dress codes are enforced for visitors, so I wrapped a scarf around my head before entering. If you find yourself inappropri­ately dressed for the occasion, there are abayas

(long cloaks to wear over your clothes) available at the mosque.

After taking off my shoes and getting my audio guide (which is highly recommende­d, as it takes you through the history, architectu­re, and interiors of the mosque) I began my tour in the open passageway­s surroundin­g the large, open, tiled centre of the mosque. Nearly 100 pillars inlaid with semi-precious stones, including Mother of Pearl, line the hallways. Beyond the pillars in the outdoor area of the mosque, reflection pools add
