Honouring the Life and Legacy of O.R. Tambo

On 19 October 2017, O.R. Tambo International Airport was the proud host of a historic milestone event, where a 2.5 m, life-sized bronze statue of struggle stalwart Oliver Tambo was unveiled in the International Arrivals Hall. The statue unveiling formed part of the O.R. Tambo Centenary celebrations, under the theme Life and Legacy of O.R. Tambo.

The location of the statue is highly significant, as it was to this airport that O.R. Tambo returned in 1990, after 30 years in exile, to be ecstatically greeted by his own people. He dedicated his life to the fight against Apartheid on an international scale and laid the foundations for a free and democratic South Africa.

The Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation and the Tambo Family were consulted as part of the process of deciding how best to represent the great man, and it soon became clear that one of the most enduring recollections of Tambo was his indefatigable 30 years of travel as he crisscrossed the globe, visiting country after country, seeking support for the ANC’S liberation struggle in South Africa.

Bongiwe Pityi, General Manager of O.R. Tambo International Airport, said: “As a strategic asset that connects Africa to the world, we are truly proud to both bear the name and have the statue of such a great legend located within our International Arrivals Hall.”
