Two Worlds, One Macallan
This is a single malt which celebrates the coming together of two styles to create a fully rounded and distinctive flavour.
It is often said that when two worlds come together, they create something magical, or simply extraordinary. For The Macallan, this is the absolute truth behind their new Macallan Double Cask 12-yearold single malt.
This is a single malt which tells the story of a journey; a story which brings together different worlds. To create Double Cask, The Macallan brings new oak from America across thousands of miles to Spain, where oak casks are crafted and sherry seasoned before travelling to The Macallan’s distillery on Speyside to mature for a minimum of 12 years. These whiskies are then harmoniously united with those also aged for a minimum of 12 years in the very best sherry seasoned European oak casks. This union reveals an unmatched investment in time and extraordinary commitment to mastery for which The Macallan has been known since 1824.
Exclusively aged in the sherry seasoned casks, The Macallan Double Cask 12-yearold delivers a distinct American oak style, reflecting a perfect harmony of flavours and natural colour. The delicate flavour of American oak – vanilla, citrus, and light oak – rises in prominence as the traditional Macallan character of rich fruit, sherry, and wood spice affords a familiar back drop. This is a flavour combination which is guaranteed until the very last drop.
Commenting on Double Cask, Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan Master Whisky Maker, says, “This is a single malt which celebrates the coming together of two styles to create a fully rounded and distinctive flavour. By combining wood influences, we have been able to produce a new Macallan, which sits perfectly between our existing Sherry Oak and Fine Oak ranges.”
Sanele Gwala, Africa Marketing Manager, says, “The introduction of this exceptional expression, The Macallan Double Cask 12-year-old to South Africa is a very exciting prospect and one which we are very proud to announce. In a market where malt whisky demand is at its greatest, we are sure this peerless spirit will attract and be appreciated by both existing and new Macallan drinkers.”
Founded in 1824, The Macallan is one of the most admired and awarded single malt whiskies in the world. The reputation of The Macallan is based on a product of outstanding quality and distinctive character, founded upon a set of guiding principles known as the Six Pillars. An obsession with quality has been the hallmark of The Macallan since its founding by Alexander Reid on a plateau above the river Spey in Northeast Scotland. The distillery is surrounded by a 150 hectare estate, with Easter Elchies House at its heart, a Highland Manor built in 1700. The history and distinctiveness of the brand, which has been revered by many whisky connoisseurs over the years, can be tasted in The Macallan Double Cask.
The Macallan has long since celebrated mastery in all fields, notably Masters of Photography and Masters of Taste. These campaigns were collaborations with the world’s greatest photographers (Annie Leibovitz, Steven Klein, Albert Watson) and chefs (The Roca Brothers) to co-create content, advertising, and craft whiskies. Over the past year The Macallan localised the concept by collaborating with local influencers, experts, and masters in their own fields to showcase various expressions of The Macallan range. Namely, mixologist Michael Stephenson who demonstrated his mastery with The Macallan Fine Oak Triple Cask, Siya Beyile whose exemplary work in the fashion space made him the perfect master to launch Edition Three (a collaboration with perfumer Roja Dove), and Seth Shezi, a seasoned traveller and expert in all things luxury, who encapsulated the seeker of Rare Moments to celebrate The Macallan Rare Cask. Lastly, entrepreneur and entertainment expert, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, a Master of Hosting who will be launching The Macallan Double Cask.
Advice from the Master of Hosting for planning the perfect event is to always prepare plates, cutlery, glasses, snack boards, and dishes in advance so that you are able to focus on making guests feel welcome when they arrive.
A self-professed gifted drinks mixer, he also always has his mixology tools on standby, and The Macallan is a favourite to serve. “Stories are key when entertaining, and The Macallan has a beautiful story, which really brings home the exceptional quality of the whisky.”
The Macallan Double Cask 12-year-old is available at selected liquor retailers for the recommended price of R599.
