The Boschendal Ex­pe­ri­ence

The cli­mate and ter­roir of the Western Cape has been the cause for many wine es­tates to come to fruition over the cen­turies – with some brands boast­ing with la­bels that fea­ture his­tor­i­cal dates from around the 1600s. One such la­bel is that of Boschendal in Stel­len­bosch.

The award-win­ning suc­cess of the Boschendal vin­tages has led to the estate ex­pand­ing to wel­com­ing guests to re­lax in the coun­try-style, yet re­fined, at­mos­phere of its ac­com­mo­da­tion of­fer­ings, and in­dulging in a re­fresh­ing din­ing ex­pe­ri­ence at The Werf Restau­rant, as well as sam­pling the wines that have made the estate fa­mous more than 300 years af­ter the seeds were first sown.

Stay and Re­lax at The Werf Cot­tages Sprawl­ing vine­yards, lush lawns, and moun­tain views – there is a lot of nat­u­ral, aes­thetic ap­peal to a stay in the Cape Winelands, and Boschendal fea­tures some of the most pic­ture-per­fect sur­round­ings.

To­wards The Werf Cot­tages, guests make their way along a gravel road with the beauty of the estate on ei­ther side, be­fore park­ing out­side their slice of coun­try charm. The one-bed­roomed

cot­tages are spa­cious, with high ex­posed wood and bam­boo ceil­ings. Walk­ing into the open plan liv­ing area, a fire­place is avail­able for chilly evenings, and there is a TV to cosy up in front of for an evening movie. The com­fort­able couch right by the win­dow is ideal for re­lax­ing on with a good book. The lounge leads into the din­ing area and kitchen, which in­cludes ev­ery­thing needed to en­sure the most com­fort­able self-cater­ing stay.

The bed­room wel­comes guests to an airy space with a king-size bed draped in net­ting (more for the am­biance than ac­tual mos­qui­tos) and lush linen. The en suite bath­room fea­tures a claw foot tub, dou­ble sinks, and shower – due to the drought in the Western Cape, Boschendal en­cour­ages its guests to save as much wa­ter as pos­si­ble though, so buck­ets are in the shower for all guests to do their part to save the pre­cious re­source.

Din­ing from the Land

The revamped orig­i­nal cel­lar of the Manor House is home to The Werf Restau­rant. Here, the fo­cus is on farm-to-ta­ble din­ing with con­tem­po­rary, flavour­ful twists.

Part of the ren­o­va­tions of Boschendal over the last decade was to turn the estate into an agri­cul­tural farm, and this has cer­tainly been achieved. The Werf Restau­rant over­looks the rows upon rows of pro­duce – and this is what comes to you at your ta­ble.

To start, a Farm In­fused Cock­tail is the per­fect aper­i­tif. The Werf’s drinks team takes clas­sic cock­tails and in­stils flavours of the farm into them: such as the Mo­jito with gin­ger, buchu, lime, and honey; the Old Fash­ioned with smoked ap­ple con­fit; and the Daiquiri with lime char­coal, beurre noisette, and porcini.

The Werf has moved away from the tra­di­tional starters and mains of menu con­struc­tion, and in­stead of­fers diners small plates of which a few are cho­sen to be shared among those at the ta­ble. The Savoury sec­tion of the menu fea­tures tra­di­tional favourites with creative nu­ances that take it to the next level of culi­nary exquisite­ness. Chokka squid spaghetti with fen­nel and goats’ cheese, slow-cooked brisket with charred beet­root and yo­ghurt, and slow-roasted lamb shoul­der with gar­den at­las car­rots are just some of the op­tions. These savouries can be com­ple­mented with sides of per­fectly crunchy roast pota­toes, gar­den salad, and roasted car­rots with hon­ey­comb.

Din­ing at The Werf Restau­rant shows off the in­cred­i­ble agri­cul­tural strides the farm has taken, as well as the kitchen’s ded­i­ca­tion to pro­duc­ing unique com­bi­na­tions and flavour­ful cre­ations.

Taste the Cre­ations

When at Boschendal, one can­not forgo tast­ing the estate’s claim to fame: the range of wines.

Out­side the Manor House un­der the oak trees that have graced the farm for hun­dreds of years, from 10h00 to 18h00, Boschendal’s wine ex­perts take guests through the award-win­ning range of wines. Premium, Stan­dard, as well as Wine and Choco­late tast­ings are avail­able.

The deli is right next door, so should you wish for a meaty snack with your wine tast­ings, bil­tong can be pur­chased there.
