The climate and terroir of the Western Cape has been the cause for many wine estates to come to fruition over the centuries – with some brands boasting with labels that feature historical dates from around the 1600s. One such label is that of Boschendal in Stellenbosch.

The award-winning success of the Boschendal vintages has led to the estate expanding to welcoming guests to relax in the country-style, yet refined, atmosphere of its accommodation offerings, and indulging in a refreshing dining experience at The Werf Restaurant, as well as sampling the wines that have made the estate famous more than 300 years after the seeds were first sown.

Stay and Relax at The Werf Cottages Sprawling vineyards, lush lawns, and mountain views – there is a lot of natural, aesthetic appeal to a stay in the Cape Winelands, and Boschendal features some of the most picture-perfect surroundings.

Towards The Werf Cottages, guests make their way along a gravel road with the beauty of the estate on either side, before parking outside their slice of country charm. The one-bedroomed

cottages are spacious, with high exposed wood and bamboo ceilings. Walking into the open plan living area, a fireplace is available for chilly evenings, and there is a TV to cosy up in front of for an evening movie. The comfortable couch right by the window is ideal for relaxing on with a good book. The lounge leads into the dining area and kitchen, which includes everything needed to ensure the most comfortable self-catering stay.

The bedroom welcomes guests to an airy space with a king-size bed draped in netting (more for the ambiance than actual mosquitos) and lush linen. The en suite bathroom features a claw foot tub, double sinks, and shower – due to the drought in the Western Cape, Boschendal encourages its guests to save as much water as possible though, so buckets are in the shower for all guests to do their part to save the precious resource.

Dining from the Land

The revamped original cellar of the Manor House is home to The Werf Restaurant. Here, the focus is on farm-to-table dining with contemporary, flavourful twists.

Part of the renovations of Boschendal over the last decade was to turn the estate into an agricultural farm, and this has certainly been achieved. The Werf Restaurant overlooks the rows upon rows of produce – and this is what comes to you at your table.

To start, a Farm Infused Cocktail is the perfect aperitif. The Werf’s drinks team takes classic cocktails and instils flavours of the farm into them: such as the Mojito with ginger, buchu, lime, and honey; the Old Fashioned with smoked apple confit; and the Daiquiri with lime charcoal, beurre noisette, and porcini.

The Werf has moved away from the traditional starters and mains of menu construction, and instead offers diners small plates of which a few are chosen to be shared among those at the table. The Savoury section of the menu features traditional favourites with creative nuances that take it to the next level of culinary exquisiteness. Chokka squid spaghetti with fennel and goats’ cheese, slow-cooked brisket with charred beetroot and yoghurt, and slow-roasted lamb shoulder with garden atlas carrots are just some of the options. These savouries can be complemented with sides of perfectly crunchy roast potatoes, garden salad, and roasted carrots with honeycomb.

Dining at The Werf Restaurant shows off the incredible agricultural strides the farm has taken, as well as the kitchen’s dedication to producing unique combinations and flavourful creations.

Taste the Creations

When at Boschendal, one cannot forgo tasting the estate’s claim to fame: the range of wines.

Outside the Manor House under the oak trees that have graced the farm for hundreds of years, from 10h00 to 18h00, Boschendal’s wine experts take guests through the award-winning range of wines. Premium, Standard, as well as Wine and Chocolate tastings are available.

The deli is right next door, so should you wish for a meaty snack with your wine tastings, biltong can be purchased there.

After you have chosen your favourite vintage during your wine tasting, take a bottle to your patio at The Werf Cottages, and cheers to a day well spent in the unparalleled beauty of the Cape Winelands.
