Brows­ing for Opu­lence

All of us could use a bit of opu­lence in our lives, and the Op­u­lent Liv­ing Con­cept Store & Gallery sit­u­ated on 24 Kloof Street in Cape Town aims to bring touches of lux­ury into the lives of their pa­trons.

Be­sides paint­ings and sculp­tures from both well-es­tab­lished and up­com­ing South African artists on dis­play, unique and lux­u­ri­ous life­style items are avail­able and pre­sented in a dis­tinc­tive shop­ping ex­pe­ri­ence.

“We are ex­cited and proud to present this from hand­bags and jewellery to se­lected fash­ion items, colour­ful kaf­tans, and op­u­lent gifts – all un­der one roof to tickle the fancy of the dis­cern­ing cus­tomer,” says co-owner, Bar­bara Len­hard.

This con­cept seems to work, as the Op­u­lent Liv­ing Con­cept Store & Gallery has es­tab­lished a great rep­u­ta­tion since the open­ing in Novem­ber 2016 – it has de­vel­oped the sta­tus of a “must-go-to” store in town.

With a fo­cus on ac­ces­si­ble and au­then­tic lux­ury paired with per­son­alised ser­vice in the art, life­style, and travel sec­tors, the Op­u­lent Liv­ing Con­cept Store & Gallery spe­cialises in con­tem­po­rary art – pre­dom­i­nantly by South African artists – as well as artisanal prod­ucts from small, trusted local sup­pli­ers.

All items are per­son­ally sourced by own­ers Bar­bara Len­hard and Flo­rian Gast, whose fo­cus is on cu­rat­ing a se­lec­tion of the best of what ar­ti­sans in Africa have to offer. “My vi­sion was and is to cre­ate a unique shop­ping ex­pe­ri­ence,” ex­plains Len­hard. “We show­case the ‘finer things in life’ while of­fer­ing a down-to-earth ap­proach to lux­ury and – very im­por­tantly to me – real value for money.”

Len­hard’s pas­sion for the beauty in life be­gan at an early age, at the same time as her recog­ni­tion of how im­por­tant hard work is. “I ap­pre­ci­ate the finer things in life be­cause I work hard for them. I grew up in a very downto-earth fam­ily and, with a fa­ther who was self-em­ployed, I learned the im­por­tance of a solid work ethic from an early age.”

The Ger­man-born busi­ness woman goes on to say, “I don’t be­lieve my cus­tomers need to break the bank in or­der to af­ford lux­ury. Granted not ev­ery­one can af­ford an orig­i­nal art­work, but they can in­vest in a lim­ited-edi­tion print. Like­wise, they can em­bel­lish an out­fit with a sim­ple but sump­tu­ous cash­mere scarf, or a one-ofa-kind neck­lace. It’s about in­vest­ing in a qual­ity prod­uct that will stand the test of time.

“My ul­ti­mate aim is that ev­ery cus­tomer leaves my store lov­ing what they have

pur­chased. And I’m proud to say that since we opened, I’ve only had one cus­tomer re­turn to ask for an ex­change.”

Ev­ery visit to the store of­fers some­thing new, and there is a con­vivial at­mos­phere in the glamorous space where cus­tomers are treated as val­ued guests and friends. That is even more ev­i­dent on Satur­day morn­ings, when any­body en­ter­ing the store gets of­fered a chilled glass of bub­bly. In fact, Len­hard’s pas­sion for bring­ing peo­ple to­gether is leg­endary, and the Con­cept Store & Gallery has also be­come known for its ex­clu­sive events, in­clud­ing Art and De­signer Evenings, where guests get to min­gle with other dis­cern­ing shop­pers and talk di­rectly to the artists and de­sign­ers be­hind the unique prod­ucts on offer.

“All our items are of the high­est qual­ity, and I so love wel­com­ing guests who ap­pre­ci­ate their prove­nance, and the pas­sion of the team that cu­rates them,” says Len­hard.

Cus­tomers can ex­pect to dis­cover a se­lec­tion of ex­clu­sive items in var­i­ous price ranges from some of South Africa’s most tal­ented de­sign­ers.
