While much has been writ­ten about the more pow­er­ful Mer­cedes-amg E 63 S, not to men­tion Youtube be­ing awash with videos ded­i­cated to the beast from Af­fal­ter­bach, the slightly more re­served Mer­cedes-amg E 43 4Matic may well turn out to be the more sen­si­ble choice between the two.

The E 43 with its 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo en­gine rep­re­sents the most pow­er­ful vari­ant of the Mer­cedes-amg 43 range, and yet its true ge­nius is dis­played in the way it smoothly transitions from a com­fort­able ex­ec­u­tive saloon into a most ca­pa­ble sports saloon. With 295 kw on tap and 520 Nm of grunt, the four­wheel drive de­liv­ers sub­lime trac­tion. Ac­cel­er­a­tion is more than ad­e­quate as the E 43 sprints from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 sec­onds and on to an elec­tron­i­cally con­trolled top speed of 250 km/h. Thanks to its rear-bi­ased torque dis­tri­bu­tion, this mid­dleweight AMG feels as ag­ile as any light­weight sports car, while the 9G-tronic au­to­matic trans­mis­sion with shorter shift times, com­bined with the sports air sus­pen­sion and the more di­rect steer­ing, in­stils a sense of con­fi­dence as this sen­si­ble 4-door de­liv­ers sig­na­ture AMG driv­ing per­for­mance.

The looks of the E 43 4Matic ren­der it im­me­di­ately recog­nis­able as a mem­ber of the AMG fam­ily. Apart from its pow­er­ful and self-as­sured outer ap­pear­ance, the in­te­rior re­in­forces the dy­namic cal­i­bre of the new E 43 4MATIC with nu­mer­ous in­di­vid­ual de­tails, sports seats with im­proved lat­eral sup­port, and uphol­stery with red top­stitch­ing. Ex­clu­sive ped­als, red seat belts, and a mul­ti­func­tion sports steer­ing wheel in black nappa leather add fur­ther sporty high­lights.

Lux­u­ri­ous, in­tel­li­gent and sporty, the Mer­cedes-amg E 43 is com­pet­i­tively priced to make this a very com­pelling op­tion in a very com­pet­i­tive seg­ment. Price: R 1,165,800
