It may have less power than the latest Mach 1, recently revealed by Ford for the first time in Europe, yet the high-performance, battery-electric, all-wheel-drive Mustang Mach-e GT is decidedly quicker than its conventional stablemate. Premier joined the party at the GT’S virtual international reveal.

Quietly scooting from zero to 100 km/h in only 3.7 seconds – equal to the Tesla Model Y – and boasting a top speed limited to 200 km/h, Ford’s latest all-electric re-imagining of its iconic Mustang, shows that the automaker is serious about playing catchup with its much younger American rival.

With a dual-motor powertrain delivering 347 kw, the Mach-e GT’S power output is still 11 kw shy of the Mach 1’s 358 kw produced at 7,000 r/min by its raucous 5.0-litre Coyote V8 (the same as the output of the Mustang Bullit), but compared to the 569 Nm (at 4,600 r/min) of torque for the Mach 1, the Mach-e GT has a whopping 830 Nm of available torque, independently distributed to the front and rear axles.

This nearly 60 Nm difference in twisting force, and the linear power delivery of the Mach-e GT, leaves the special Mach 1 (with a zero to 100 km/h time of around 4.3 seconds) in its dust – while still delivering the spirited performance and character of the iconic Mustang sports car, alongside the ability to carry five occupants in allelectric refinement, according to Ford.

The Mustang Mach-e GT made its European debut in Rotterdam, Netherlands, as part of Ford’s Go Electric roadshow. Its bespoke specification includes Magneride adaptive suspension, 20” alloy wheels, red-painted brake callipers and unique exterior colours – including Grabber Blue and Cyber Orange. Inside, a 15.5” full-hd touch display supports a next-generation SYNC communication and entertainment system that can learn from driver behaviour, and features Ford Performance seats and a unique steering wheel with suede inserts.

All About That Range

Standard in the Mach-e GT is an 88 kwh extendedrange battery for a targeted WLTP pure-electric driving range of up to 500 km, according to the automaker, supported by Intelligent Range, which more accurately predicts how much range drivers have left – using past driving behaviour, weather forecasts and crowdsourced data from other Mustang Mach-e vehicles.

Ford also announced that the standard Mach-e, equipped with an extended-range battery and allwheel drive, will deliver a 5.1-second zero to 100 km/h acceleration time – equal to the Tesla Model Y Long Range model – and a targeted WLTP pure-electric driving range of up to 540 km. The company’s Fordpass Charging Network is also the largest network of public charging stations in Europe, and in partnership with Newmotion, customers will be able to use the Fordpass app to locate, navigate to, pay for, and monitor charging at locations across 21 countries.

Final Thoughts

Ford is also a founder member and shareholder in the IONITY consortium – delivering high-power charging stations along motorway routes and at key European locations. Charging with up to 150 kw at an IONITY station, the Mach-e in the extended-range battery, rearwheel-drive configuration is estimated to add about 119 km driving range within approximately 10 minutes of charging, with a targeted WLTP pure-electric driving range of up to 610 km.
