Being whale season, we went in to town to have lunch at Bientang’s Cave; shamefully I had never been there before. You cannot get closer to the crashing waves without being in them. Carved into the cliff face, this is a must-visit, and the calamari is excellent.
Hermanus is famous for being one of the best land-based whale watching locations in the world, and you can see the Southern rights frolicking there with their calves from now until late November or December. Numbers peak in September, and the annual Whale Festival takes place on September 28 to 30. Sadly, I have the worst luck – last weekend more than 1 300 whales were spotted, probably because I wasn’t there.
