Cornelius SA finds his groove
CORNELIUS SA is a man on a mission – he wants to penetrate the international deep house music scene.
Born Cornelius Tshepo Mashilane in Atteridgeville, he is a self-taught DJ and producer who fell in love with house music during his primary school years.
He furthered his dream while in secondary school when a friend taught him the art of DJing, first with vinyl and he was later introduced to the new technology of CDj at the age of 18 right after completing his matric.
Cornelius SA said he was inspired by local and international electronic dance music, soulful house and deep house names such as Nick Holder, Louie Vega, Bonobo, Vinny Da Vinci, Thom Yorke, Vakula and others.
He worked with a few record labels, but signing up with Toronto-based DNH Records with his single EP titled Falling Again, featuring Charlie & PJ, was a reality that cemented his arrival in the industry.
Following the release came recognition from Tim White of House Afrika, Metro FM’s T-Deep, Essential-i (Deeptone Recordings) and Themba Moshidi of GoGo Music by featuring his craft on their mixes.
His follow-up EP on DNH Records with Gary Cooper titled Ambition added to his achievements when his track Endless was featured on Vadim Balaev’s DJ Top10 on the largest independent electronic online magazine, Resident Advisor.
Cornelius SA’s skills proved to be outstanding and unique when he together with a friend entered the Bridges For Music, CTEMF 2015 Loco Dice Tour which takes place every February in different venues around South Africa. They won the DJ mix competition, but couldn’t make it to the venue.
They then won the DJ Nascent and Stones & Bones – Supernatural Love remix competition together with Gary Cooper, which got recommendations from top names in the industry such as Vinny Da Vinci of House Afrika, Fistaz Mixwell, and Rob Forbes of 5fm. That healed the wounds from the earlier missed opportunity.
Cornelius SA is signed with New Jersey based Kenny Dope’s Dopewax Records label, Anane Vega’s Nulu Music (New York) and Jullian Gomes and Kid Fonque’s Stay True Sounds (South Africa).
“Last year I got a signing from Kenny Dope and released a successful single on his label titled, Heaven.
“It features Lotoya ‘Honey Molasses’ Khambule on vocals and got thousands of eyeballs worldwide,” he told the Pretoria News.
“I then later received a compliment from Tortured Soul about the originality and the quality on my sound.
“As a result, I met them and rubbed shoulders and we sipped a glass of scotch whisky together and chatted about music in general during their tour in South Africa last year.
“The exciting news then came when they asked me to work on a remix for their forthcoming release, You Live Too Far, coming out on January 27 on all digital music platforms worldwide.
“It’s actually amazing to follow in Black Coffee and Mi Casa’s footsteps. I feel blessed and humbled.”
He added that coming back home, Keep Your Mouth Shut would be his first offering this year. The song is included on the Stay True Selections Vol 2 compilation, out next Friday.
