THE ongoing disaster at Ugu Municipality, regarding water accounts in arrears, comes as no surprise and serious introspection is needed.

I was shocked to hear that in Umzinto the residents have to fork out a basic charge of R156.81 for water plus a sanitation charge of R269.16 plus VAT, totalling R485.60 every month, before usage and consumption.

Cancelling of an account does not seem to be permitted and, if you live in a “rural” area owning a palace, your tariffs are different to that of an Indian or maybe former white area. This discrepancy needs to be addressed and the Ugu basic tariffs need to be uniform for all residential and business users, with a volume-based charge.
