Lo­cal sil­ver­smith’s work adds to the shine

Sum­mer sale lots in­clude fur­ni­ture and war mem­o­ra­bilia

VIEW­ING be­gins on Wed­nes­day for Bernardi Auc­tion­eers’ sum­mer auc­tion of South African art, col­lecta­bles and es­tate jew­ellery sched­uled for Oc­to­ber 20, at 10am.

The auc­tion will be held at 65 Thomp­son Street, Col­byn, Pre­to­ria.

There will be a spot­light on sil­ver at the sale.

Among the note­wor­thy items on of­fer will be an Amer­i­can three-piece ster­ling sil­ver Rose pat­tern tea set by Sa­muel Kirk and Son of Bal­ti­more and a snuff box by renowned South African sil­ver­smith Jo­hannes Com­brink; Geor­gian Old English ta­ble sil­ver; and a Vic­to­rian sil­ver-mounted fish-eater set by UK jewellers Map­pin Webb & Co.

Royal Copen­hagen hand-painted botan­i­cal Flora Dan­ica rack plates; a Wilkin­son-Clarice Cliff orig­i­nal Pyra­mids six-piece sand­wich set; and two Farm­house pat­tern wall plates are also likely to at­tract in­ter­est.

Also on of­fer will be a late 19th-cen­tury Scot­tish ship’s star­board lantern, a com­pact Cam­er­a­phone gramo­phone turntable and Ra­jasthani painted minia­tures.

The fur­ni­ture and em­bel­lish­ment lots in­clude a Vic­to­rian pale ma­hogany li­brary sec­re­tairé book­case, a pair of Napoleon III-styled fig­u­ral lamps, and French sculp­tor Gaudez’s bronze of Ac­téon.

High­lights of the Cape and Transvaal fur­ni­ture in­clude an An­glo-Cape yel­low­wood Con­is­ton House linen press, Voortrekker yel­low­wood lead­lined kap­piekis and koskas, and rare Transvaal riem­pie benches.

Con­tem­po­rary pieces in­clude Nor­we­gian avant-garde Luxo Am­neris stan­dard up­lighters and a chrome­framed leather up­hol­stered Clas­sic arm­chair.

An­glo-Boer War mem­o­ra­bilia and pris­oner-of-war hand­i­crafts from the AC Bo­den­stein Col­lec­tion, Ed­ward VIII 1937 Coro­na­tion and Duke of Wind­sor sou­venirs, form part of the mem­o­ra­bilia on of­fer.

Bernardi sales are renowned for strong art of­fer­ings and this will be no ex­cep­tion, with stand-out lots in­clud­ing Frans Oerder’s Dutch Im­pres­sion­is­tic-style mas­ter­piece, Frank Spears’ Hen­nie Nie­mann’s

and Pierneef’s linocut,
