US to offer aid for Ethiopian reforms

Pretoria News - - WORLD -

ADDIS ABABA: The US will provide financial assistance to Ethiopia as it pursues political reforms, the office of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said yesterday during a visit by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Ethiopia has long been an ally of the US, which supplies about $1 billion (R14.97bn) in aid annually. Pompeo praised political reforms Ahmed has spearheaded ahead of Ethiopia’s upcoming elections. Ethiopians are to vote in August in a ballot Ahmed has promised will be free and fair.

Ahmed’s reforms have also unleashed ethnic and political tensions.
