Cop shot dead in assault case follow-up

POLICE in Garsfontein are mourning the loss of a detective who was shot and killed on duty.

He was killed on Sunday morning while he and his two colleagues were following up on a case of assault.

According to the police, the three detectives approached a suspect on the corner of Garstfontein and Rubenstein roads.

The suspect started pelting the officers with stones as they were attempting to apprehend him. He then managed to grab an officer’s firearm and shot at the officer, police said. The other officers shot back, leaving the suspect wounded.

He is in hospital under police guard and will appear in court on charges of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

“The detectives who were with the deceased member must be commended for applying the necessary force to apprehend the man that allegedly attacked them and subsequently killed the detective constable,” said national police commissioner General Khehla Sitole.

He condemned the incident and called on detectives to ensure that justice prevailed for the dead detective.
