Jack Welch dies

NEW YORK: Jack Welch, the for­mer pow­er­house chair­man and chief ex­ec­u­tive of Gen­eral Elec­tric, has died aged 84, the com­pany said.

Welch reigned over the com­pany from 1981 to 2001, vastly ex­pand­ing its em­pire and wealth, mak­ing him a leg­end in the cor­po­rate world in the Ron­ald Rea­gan-era and beyond.

How­ever, the com­pany be­came too dif­fi­cult to man­age at its out­sized lev­els and in re­cent years has been trimmed back. “There was no cor­po­rate leader like ‘neu­tron’ Jack. He was my friend and sup­porter, ” said Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump, us­ing a nick­name Welch earned in part be­cause he cut jobs.
