Q&A with hip-hop star Sokutu

Pretoria News - - METRO - MPILETSO MOTUMI Eyes. It Two You Know

EASTERN CAPE-born Sarifa Malaika Sokutu, a talented hip-hop artist, officially started her career in music with the release of her debut single,

Now she releases her second single, You Know It, which was worked on by Andy Beats from Zambia and then reproduced and engineered by S Zimanyi, who is originally from Zimbabwe.

The song is about life being a roller-coaster.

It is a song about the ups and downs of life and through it all knowing who you are.

If you have shed a lot of tears and fears growing up; if you know the pain of losing people and friends; if you have experienced life, getting lost in the happenings of life, then

is for you, you will definitely love this song.

The 19-year-old has received a lot of support from local media and enjoyed airplay of her first single on many radio stations. She spoke to The Star about her favourite social media apps, curbing human trafficking and her first cellphone brand:

What is your favourite social media app?

It’s hard to choose between Twitter and Instagram but I think I’d have to choose Twitter.

If you could come up with your own app, what would it do and what would you call it?

Ha ha! Umm, I’ve never thought about that but if I had an app I’d call it “Track Your Step”. With so much human trafficking going on in the world, it would be an app that helps locate people by using their devices whether they’re on or off. All a person would need to do is to register their device and turn on their location at all times and “Track Your Step” would take it from there.

How has technology you in your craft?

A lot of things that I’ve been able to do in my career are because of technology.

It makes my life so much easier and limits the problems that I encounter. It has helped me build relationships with fans and the people close to me and now they are able to connect with me and my music.

Technology has helped broaden the horizons of my creativity and I feel like now I evolve on a daily basis because every day I learn something new.

What was the first cellphone brand you had?

I think it was Nokia if I remember correctly.

What do you understand of the term IoT?

I don’t really know much about the Internet of Things. My basic understanding from school is that IoT is a network of internet connected objects able to connect and exchange data.

What is your take on internet trolls?

They are miserable people who say negative things on the internet about other people so they can also feel miserable about themselves. I don’t think anyone should pay attention to them.
