‘Do not rent space to illegal schools’
RESIDENTS who rented out RDP houses and back rooms to illegal schools contributed to a widespread problem affecting the Olievenhoutbosch community.
ANC branch secretary in the area Kenny Masha has warned residents not to contribute to the problem.
Masha said the ANC, ANC Youth League, SACP and the South African National Civic Organisation have joined forces to shut down illegal and unregistered schools operating from RDP houses and back rooms in the area.
However, he said it was now time for the community to take note of this problematic habit and refrain from renting their properties to unscrupulous people.
He said the leadership would meet the Independent School Directorate, after which the illegal schools would be served with notices to cease operating.
“We took them to the schools last week and they gave the people operating the schools verbal instructions to stop what they were doing.
“When they come back they will issue the letters so that these schools know that what they have been doing here is wrong. Already one school has vacated the RDP houses it was renting, but we have heard it’s in another part of Olievenhoutbosch.
“With that said, we are saying our people need to be aware of this problem and help us make things right by refusing to take part in this.
“This problem of people renting out their RDP houses is one that is widespread and it will need the government to conduct proper and thorough research on the matter.”
Masha said the leadership would continue engaging the community on this matter until it was accepted that one could not accept such tenants.
The Department of Education in Gauteng provided mobile classrooms to accommodate learners who were removed from the unregistered schools.
