Programme launched to support city’s retired sportsmen

- Jordan Erradu

The Kwazulu-natal Department of Sports and Recreation (KZNDSR), in collaboration with the Durban University of Technology (DUT), has rolled out a programme to help retired sportsmen and women set up academies in their respective codes of sports.

Honourable Thulani Xulu, member of the Provincial Legislature and an ex-professional football player with Golden Arrows, together with KZNDSR Head of Department, Dr. Sifunda, hosted a meeting with ex-professional football players, legends and sports masters.

Xulu explained the purpose of the meeting was to assist the players and coaches on how to set up football academies and to listen to the challenges experienced by the ex-pros, legends, masters and coaches.

"We do not want to interfere with any structure, but want to get closer to the ex-professionals, coaches, etc. The premier has asked us to go out and listen and engage with ex-professionals and coaches," said Xulu.

The ex-professionals and legends articulated their concerns, with funding being their major challenge. Thami Mahlanze outlined the challenges faced by coaches in identifying and developing talent at grassroots levels. Among these challenges were the lack of parental support and the need to invest in sports psychologists.

Speaking on behalf of DUT Midlands, Mike Mbatha offered the use of the facilities of the campus to the coaches of all codes of sport. However, he stressed, coaches must be equipped with the science for coaching sport. He added that DUT is the hub for sport in the Umgungundlovu district and it is well-equipped.

Sifunda said it was an honour for her to be at the meeting, and for the department to assist sportspeople. In terms of funding, delegates were informed that the KZNDSR has a funding policy with criteria that has to be strictly followed. It is a high end document commissioned by the National Academy. One of the outcomes of the meeting was the adoption of a resolution to convene a two-day workshop in the first week of May where all relevant departments will be present.*
