Businessman fixes Bisley Road

-

Alocal businessman and Bisley resident has taken the initiative to repair the pothole-ridden Bisley Road, which is used daily by residents as well as visitors to the Bisley Nature Reserve.

The recent heavy rains and flooding rendered the road virtually unusable. Small potholes became gaping craters and vehicles had to come to a complete stop and then inch forward to negotiate the cavernous potholes.

Nolan Govender, owner of Nolan’s Plant and Tool Hire, has been hard at work repairing the road, which is also used by tourists and other visitors to the Bisley Nature Reserve.

Utilising a team of about 15 workmen, four heavy duty vehicles and a roller, Govender set about repairing the road recently. The cost of the materials and the labour used was borne entirely by Govender.

The Friends of Bisley Nature Reserve (FOBNR) expressed their appreciation to Govender for his initiative. Peter West, chairperson of FOBNR said: “He undertakes these repairs at his own expense. No fuss, he just quietly gets on with it. A huge thanks to Govender for his support for FOBNR.”

An Intaba Ridge homeowner, Avril Turpin, echoed that residents and users of Bisley Road owe Govender a huge debt of gratitude. “Govender is always stepping up and assisting. He has repaired this road, which would have deteriorated even further without his intervention,” said Turpin.

Turpin added that the lack of maintenance of the road by the Msunduzi Municipality was posing a great threat to residents’ vehicles.

Govender said he has been repairing the Bisley Road around the Bisley Nature Reserve for five years. “The Bisley Nature Reserve is something we should all be proud of. It is an iconic nature reserve and tourists from all over the world come here. The potholes are very dangerous and we need to make the road safe for everyone,” said Govender.

Govender added that the municipality promises to repair the road, but this never materialises. Therefore, he has taken the initiative to patch up the road at his own expense in order to uplift the city.
