All set for Jerry Barnes Ward 34 Sports Day this Saturday

-

The annual Jerry Barnes Ward 34 Community Sport Day and Tournament will go ahead full steam as planned this weekend.

The event is also open to other teams coming from other areas and wards.

The organiser and the founder of the event, Jerry Barnes, said although this year's event did not secure major sponsors, the event will proceed as planned this Saturday, September 24 at Panorama Primary School, from 8:30am.

The event will cater for Under 13 boys (soccer), seniors men/open (soccer)and women's open/seniors teams. Before soccer fixtures, the community will also have a chance to loosen up and enjoy the 4.5km fun walk and run around the neighbourhood.

“For this fun event, I encourage parents, children and grandparents to come walk together and just have fun," said Barnes.

Barnes said he is just thankful to be able to put on the annual sporting event again this year, even without partners, funders or sponsors. He thanked his neighbours for encouraging him to pursue with the planning of the sports day.

"The support, prayers and words of encouragement and support from friends and neighbours really helped keep me focused. Many years ago I had a wish of hosting an annual event for my community, especially the youth. I prayed about it and the Almighty God answered my prayer.

"I asked God and he gave me this, so I can’t stop it," he said, stressing the event is purely for the community. It is not attached to any club and has no affiliation to any political or religious organisation.

"This event belongs to each and every community member of Ward 34. Our aim is to encourage our children from areas such Eastwood, Panorama, Cinderella Park, Thembalihle, Copesville and Malivana to play sport and stay away from social ills.

"I always believe that if you are able to convince children to take part in sport for a couple of hours, you will help that child stay away from trouble and crime," he said.

Barnes thanked everybody for their support.

"It's finally happening and the all the glory and praise must go to the Almighty God," he added.

Community stalls are still available on site at a discounted rate.

Any teams that still wish to compete can contact Barnes on 083 521 9553.
