- Chanel George

Sagaren Vilvanathan Naidoo, fondly known as Willy, and former principal of M L Sultan Secondary School, died on May 3. According to his family, friends and colleagues, he was a man of immense capacity and integrity, who served with pride and dignity and a pillar of strength, support, and encouragement to everyone.

Anasheree Archary, Naidoo’s sister, said he was a beacon of love and compassion, who touched the lives of many people.

"He was a giant figure in the field of education, where he dedicated his life to shaping the young minds of future generations. His hard work, perseverance, and ability to connect with those around him made him a beloved figure among his learners and colleagues.

“He leaves behind a legacy of piety, activism, and service to his community. Willy was a devoted member of the SSSM Temple, where he served on the council and held the position of chairperson for many years. He was also an active member of the African National Congress (ANC), where he fought tirelessly for equality and justice,” said Archary.

Archary said Naidoo’s passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him especially in the education fraternity. However, his kindness, compassion and unwavering dedication to his profession will continue to inspire and guide those who knew him.

"We have lost a valuable member, and our family and friends are mourning the loss of a beloved son, brother, friend and a phenomenal leader. We are deeply saddened by his untimely departure.

“As our eldest brother, he served as a role model and mentor to my siblings and I. I was fortunate to secure a teaching post at M L Sultan Secondary and saw him rise to the position of principal at this school,” said Archary.

She added that Naidoo led with passion, dedication and commitment and was indeed an inspiration to his colleagues. He was a logical thinker and was the go-to person when challenges arose.

“His loss is being felt by the entire Naidoo family. We will forever cherish his memory. Despite our overwhelming grief, Willy’s wonderful legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched during his time on earth. Despite his illness in the last few years, he remained committed and continued with his duties until his retirement in January,” said Archary.

Phumlani Duma, the South African Democratic Teacher's Union (SADTU) provincial chairman, described Naidoo as a workaholic.

"As the principal, he would fetch his learners from the market area. He helped other newly appointed principals to manage schools efficiently. He was part of the amalgamation process of the former departments of education.

“He was known for his slogan "fly now pay later" which meant that we must be given service now and we will sort you out later,” said Duma.

He added that we have lost one of our greatest leaders in the Midlands Region.

Vishnu Naidoo, a colleague and friend who served with Naidoo as SADTU leaders for over three decades, described him as a fierce and an uncompromising leader who served the working class, especially in fighting for the rights and dignity of educators.

“Comrade Willy had an illustrious career. He was a learner at M L Sultan Secondary where he matriculated in 1980. He remained a principled leader right till the end. He sought not for himself but to serve as the voice of the thousands of educators in SADTU,” said Naidoo.
