Raisethorpe CBD gets a clean-up

- Prashalan Govender

The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (BKWSU) Pietermaritzburg branch spent the weekend cutting grass, picking-up litter, and installing four concrete bins in the Raisethorpe CBD over the weekend.

BKWSU student Eva Gounder said the idea of cleaning the area had been proposed for some time as the initiative believes people “can help each other to grow in terms of awareness of the natural world as a living system that needs care.”

Gounder, who is also a member of the BKWSU Environmental Initiative, added that the clean-up initiative encouraged people to become more mindful and compassionate in their environmental choices as such choices “can be felt in all spheres of life.”

She said she and other BK Environmental Initiative members were “extremely grateful for the kind gestures” of many in the city.

“A small group of local people were readily available to assist with the clean-up involving grass cutting, and litter picking. The Msunduzi Municipality’s Parks Department provided eight trees and four concrete bins, and Ideal Face, a local brick supplier provided the transportation of the bins at no cost,” she said.

Gounder said she hoped the initiative would encourage others to participate in community clean-ups and be more mindful of their lifestyle's environmental impact.

“The Raisethorpe CBD can certainly be revitalised with fresh new ideas to enhance living in our beautiful city,” Gounder said.

BKWSU is a women-led spiritual organisation with centres globally. The organisation is committed to personal transformation and world renewal through free community-based services open to all. There are two centres based in Pietermaritzburg - one in Scottsville and another in Raisethorpe.
