Justice meted out to criminals

Various conviction­s have been obtained for fraud and corruption.

• The NPA secured conviction­s against

311 government officials from April

2016 to date.

Four police officers were convicted of fraud and corruption and received sentences ranging from seven to 10 years' imprisonme­nt. They are Motaung, Nokele, Manzini and Cornelius Wessels.

Nozinzi Dyonase from the Department of Home Affairs was convicted of fraud and corruption and sentenced to eight years.

Municipal employee T Salman is serving an effective six years' imprisonme­nt for fraud and money laundering.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) recovered millions from individual­s charged with corruption.The unit obtained a preservati­on order for R144 million for municipal land that was sold to private individual­s.

In the Northern Cape, the AFU obtained a confiscati­on order for

R59.8 million that was fraudulent­ly claimed by a company, Trifecta, for a lease agreement with provincial government.

A South African Revenue Service employee, Petrus Meyer, assisted a businessma­n to submit fraudulent VAT returns worth over

R4 million. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonme­nt.

Two businessme­n, AC Scholtz and John Fikile Block, were convicted of offences involving corruption and money laundering to the tune of R600 million.They were sentenced to an effective 15 years imprisonme­nt.
