Coastal drive in the Mazda3 Astina

Road Trip - - TRIP GEMS - Story and images captured by Jim Freeman

You do not need a fancy 4x4 or SUV to get away from the rat race, insists Jim Freeman. Join him as he takes a Mazda3 Astina to the naughtily named Tietiesbaai and neighbouring Paternoster.

There is a place, just over an hour outside of Cape Town, with a name that makes children giggle: Tietiesbaai.

There is also a spot nearby where you can take these tittering tots and drop them at a child-friendly shack sufficiently far away from you (without feeling guilty about abandoning them) so that you cannot hear their sniggers.the place is called Sea Shack and I managed to get here without a whimper of protest in a very surprising Mazda3 2.0 Astina Plus.

Then again, I did do the trip on my lonesome, but you can do the same trip as a romantically inclined couple or a family. My advice would be to do it midweek because then you can fully appreciate the isolation and quiet of a spot where the tide laps softly just a few metres away from the door of your shack. At the same time, the Cape Columbine lighthouse sweeps a beam over the Atlantic Ocean above your head and its foghorn echoes eerily on misty nights.

Essentially, Sea Shack is an unpretentious, off-the-grid West Coast hideout that is close to – as they say in Pr-speak – “all amenities”. Located within the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, there is no human habitation within several kilometres
