Road Trip - - GEMS TRIP - Captured in Bonnievale by Ryan Abbott | TCB Media

No road trip is complete without an epic playlist to accompany it. Roadtrip hopes to help our readers create an epic playlist of their own by asking our contributors for their own ultimate road trip playlists. This month, regular contributor and ’Seventies rocker Paul van Gass shares some of his all-time road trip favourites.

For me the ’Seventies (and early ’Eighties) was the period of original epic and progressive rock, a time when even jazz, soul, or blues was influenced by rock music. It was also the time of the super bands, such as Queen, The Eagles, CCR, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Genesis, Supertramp, Journey, Kansas, Boston, ZZ Top,toto, yes and Styx, to name a few, and the heavy metal rockers: Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Nazareth, Blue Oyster Cult, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest … The list goes on.

Oh, and locally the early ’eighties led to the Voëlvry movement, seeing the resurgence of Afrikaans rock, with Johannes Kerkorrel and the Gereformeerde Blues Band, Bernoldus Niemand, and others … It was an exciting, tumultuous time that produced some of the most memorable songs ever, the type of music you want to hear when on a road trip. Enjoy …
