Road Trip Worthy Events
We are celebrating adventure this month. Not only does this include an adventurous, beautiful redesign of Roadtrip (let us know what you think of the new layout, designed by Ryan Abbott), it also comprises a tribute to Land Rover, the vehicle that gave substance to the concept of a motorised African safari, and a respectful nod to the new Toyota RAV4, the vehicle that started the SUV craze.
The worldwide adventure inside these pages starts with a visit to Pelican Point and Walvis Bay in Namibia in the latest compact crossover coupé from BMW, the new X2, continuing from there to Swakopmund and up the Skeleton Coast to meet the Lion Man, Dr Philip Stander, and his trusty old Land Cruiser near Terrace Bay. And what better vehicle for this trip than the recently facelifted Prado, the latest Cruiser in the Toyota line-up and an adventure vehicle without equal.
For an adventure of a different kind; paying a visit to all the surfing hotspots on the East Coast of South Africa, contributor Jim Freeman used another iconic road trip vehicle, the venerable Volkswagen Kombi, in top-of-the-line California Coast guise, while we also explored the Brakkeduine dune trail close to Oyster Bay in the tough-looking Mitsubishi Triton Extreme.
Our adventure trails contributor and author of the popular adventure blog The Daywalkers, Jacques Kok this month finds himself amongst wild animals on the scenic grasslands of Ezemvelo, close to Bronkhorstspruit, while travel writer Brian Berkman tells us more about his first self-drive experience within the environs of the vast Kruger National Park.
We also tell you more about an adventure with a difference – traversing Lake Baikal in Siberia, the oldest, deepest, and biggest lake in the world – in Mazda CX5 AWD models, and on the other side of the temperature spectrum we narrate the trials and tribulations of a group of Japanese adventurers who recently retraced the epic original route of the iconic Paris-dakar Rally Raid, taking on the vast Sahara Desert in a very improbable expedition vehicle … the latest plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius.
Having covered destinations ranging from ice covered lakes to burning deserts, beautiful beaches to bushveld, we did not forget exotic islands, as Jim Freeman, mounted on a Harley and a BMW ’bike, found that while Mauritius may be a paradise for motorcyclists, it is not for the faint-hearted.
Finally, we pay tribute to the 70-year heritage of Land Rover, also highlighting the unique and special Landies assembled in South Africa, because without vehicles such as the original Series Land Rovers, adventures as we experience it today would not have been possible.
Here is to many more years of adventure …
