With the digital trail following the global launch of the Ford Bronco launch still hot on device screens worldwide, Jeep was quick to announce the introduction of a brawny V8-powered Rubicon model to its Wrangler range – a derivative aimed at “amping up the Jeep fun-to-drive quotient and trail-rated 4×4 capability”.

The big 6.4-litre (392 cubic-inch) V8 Hemi engine in the new Rubicon 392 Concept comes from other FCA Group (Stellantis) models such as the Dodge Charger and Challenger but has been detuned to deliver a still stonking 336 kw and 610 Nm of torque, good enough for a 0-100 km/h time of about five seconds.

The last time the Wrangler was offered with a V8 engine was in the 1981 Jeep CJ7 with a five-litre V8 that delivered 93 kw and 298 Nm of torque. Jeep enthusiasts have been clamouring for a V8 powered production Wrangler for many years, and the new Rubicon 392 Concept is a sure indication they may soon get their wish.

Says Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA North America, “Wrangler enthusiasts have been asking us for a

Wrangler V8, and our new Rubicon 392 Concept proves that we have the ability to make that happen. Jeep is clearly listening to its customers and we are anxious to gauge their reaction to this new concept.”

Suspension upgraded

To accommodate the 6.4-litre V8 engine and a robust, stronger eight-speed transmission and full-time 4×4 transfer case, the Rubicon 392 Concept features upgraded engine mounts and a modified frame. Suspension upgrades include new aluminium, monotube Fox shocks for improved damping, and heat dissipation ad a dual-mode exhaust alters the performance sound at the touch of a button.

According to Jeep the Wrangler V8 concept boasts even more capability courtesy of massive engine torque, third-generation Dana 44 axles, a Selectrack full-time two-speed transfer case, Tru-lok electric front and rear-axle locking differentials, 37-inch mud-terrain tyres, and custom 17-inch beadlock wheels.

A factory Jeep Performance Parts two-inch lift kit from Mopar ensures additional suspension articulation and improved approach (51.6 degrees), breakover (29.5 degrees), and departure (40.1 degrees) angles, as well as unprecedented levels of water fording capability (34 inches).

The Rubicon 392 Concept also features Rubicon rock rails, steel bumpers with a Warn winch, and a steel belly pan – all added to help navigate the toughest offroad terrains and to deliver an incredible and unmatched level of fun-to-drive performance and capability, according to Jeep.

Outside, the Rubicon 392 Concept features Granite Crystal paint adorned with bronze accentuated tow hooks, badging, springs, shocks and wheels, custom half doors, a power top, and removable side panels. Inside, the Concept features rich Red Rock-coloured leather bolstered seats with gold stitching, along with a performance steering wheel.

With reaction to the V8 concept expected to be overwhelmingly positive, production of this new flagship Wrangler model may commence before year-end in the Jeep plant in Toledo, Ohio …
