German carmaker Opel has recently revealed the second generation of its Mokka compact bestseller model; capable of zero emission electric driving, it is highly efficient and more compact than ever, and also the first model to show the new Opel Vizor front fascia – a design that will feature on all of the models of the Blitz brand throughout the 2020s.

The Mokka, with its bold, headturning styling, is also the first model in the history of Opel available from introduction with electric drive. The electric motor of the Mokka-e delivers 100 kw and 260 Nm of maximum torque, instantly available from a standing start. Its top speed is limited to 150 km/h to preserve energy stored in the 50 kwh battery and to extend its range.

The Mokka-e has three drive modes – Normal, Eco, and Sport – and a purely battery-electric range of up to 322 km according to WLTP1 in Normal mode. Eco mode supports the driver in achieving the maximum possible range. A 100 kw DC fast-charging system allows the battery to be charged to 80% in only 30 minutes, and the Mokka-e is ready for all charging options; from single-phase to three-phase at 11 kw.

New platform, new tech

Based on a new version of the PSA/ Opel multi-energy and lightweight CMP (Common Modular Platform), the Mokka will be available with purely battery-electric drive as well as internal combustion engines. The newcomer is up to 120 kg lighter, compared to the previous generation vehicle, and torsional stiffness is up by as much as 30%.

Despite a slightly longer wheelbase (+2 mm), the new Mokka, at 4,15 m, is 125 mm shorter than the previous generation and offers up to 350 l of luggage space. The design has stunning proportions, characterised by short overhangs (-61 mm in the front, -66 mm in the rear) and a wide stance, enhanced by 18-inch wheels.

Glare-free Intellilux LED matrix headlights with 14 elements used on the Mokka is unique in its category, and all model variants come standard with LED lamps at the front and rear, an electric parking brake, as well as traffic sign recognition. A 180-degree panorama rearview camera is also available.

The Opel Vizor philosophy continues in the interior where the Pure Panel repeats the design intention with two wide screens of up to 10 and 12 inches in size. The Pure Panel provides the latest technologies and most important information for the driver and all controls and connectivity modules are elegantly integrated.

The new Mokka and Mokka-e will be on sale in Europe from this month and available in dealerships from early 2021. The newcomer will also be offered with efficient diesel and petrol engines. The new Mokka will probably reach South Africa later next year, and it will be interesting to see whether the electric derivative is incorporated in the local line-up.
