Nissan Ariya
Electric Ariya coupé crossover
Nissan has recently revealed the new Nissan Ariya electric coupé crossover, the second all-electric vehicle from the Japanese company, marking a new chapter for the brand – further validated by the introduction of a redesigned brand logo – during a livestreamed event to a global audience from the Nissan Pavilion in Yokohama, Japan.
Heavily based on the similarly named concept vehicle displayed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show and first hinted at with the IMX at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, the Qashqai-sized production model represent the new electrified brand identity of Nissan.
Built on the CMF-EV platform, the new Ariya offers an entirely new driving experience with powerful acceleration and smooth, quiet operation, according to Nissan, as well as an interior with a welcoming, luxurious lounge-like atmosphere.
Cutting-edge design
The Japanese term iki characterises the cutting-edge nature of the design. The front of the vehicle appears seamless; highlighted by a reimagined shield-like grille – incorporating a 3-D, traditional Japanese kumiko-pattern under its smooth surface – protecting sensing equipment for PROPILOT functions and Intelligent
Key detection.
The redesigned Nissan brand logo, composed of 20 crisp LEDS, is prominently placed at the centre of the grille. In keeping both sun- and bar-design elements, the logo signals respect for the company heritage while moving towards a future of mobility services and electrification. Thin LED headlamps and sequential turn signals reinvents the signature Nissan V-motion design.
Viewed from the side, the Ariya has a low, sleek roofline, and a single, uninterrupted horizon line. Sporty, five-spoke, 19-inch aluminium wheels (20-inch wheels are also available) enhances its dynamic stance. At the rear, a steeply raked C-pillar blends into the rear deck and a one-piece rear light blade gives a blackout effect when parked, and red illumination when in use.
The lounge-like cabin of the Ariya is one of the most spacious in its class. With the climate control system installed under the bonnet, designers could utilise the whole length of the cabin without obstructions. The flat, open floor and slim profile seats result in vast amounts of legroom.
The minimalist dashboard, devoid of buttons and switches, blends seamlessly with the cabin shape. The display interface features a 12.3-inch monitor and 12.3inch centre display along a single horizon. Primary climate control functions are integrated into the centre dash and operated by haptic switches that vibrates
when touched. A fold-out tray in the centre storage box transforms the cabin into a mobile office.
Wide model range
With five core models offered in Europe, including two-wheel-drive and all-wheeldrive versions featuring the awkwardly named e-4orce.system (The “e” standing for 100% electric motor drive and “4ORCE” referring to physical energy, with “4” representing all-wheel control), the Ariya meets the driving needs of a wide range of customers.
According to Nissan, the E-4ORCE system, used in the twin electric motor, allwheel-drive models, is the spiritual offspring of the ATTESA E-TS system used in the Nissan GT-R and the intelligent 4×4 system of the Nissan Patrol. Besides optimising front- and rear torque, the system applies independent brake control to maximise cornering force generated by each wheel.
The Ariya 63 kwh two-wheel-drive model is ideal for urban and suburban commuters, with the 87 kwh two-wheeldrive models expanding on the 63 kwh with an upgraded powertrain and additional range for longer journeys. The E-4ORCE 63kwh all-wheel-drive model offers a good balance in performance and value.
With almost no compromise on range (around 500 km on a charge), this model offers ample performance and innovative new technologies. Topping the range, the Ariya E-4ORCE 87 kwh Performancemodel benefits from a higher power output to deliver the best performance-technology combination. All models will be rated to tow up to 1 500 kg.
Three drive modes, Standard, Sport, and ECO (E-4ORCE models include an additional Snow mode), customises the drive experience and quick-charging is possible. The Ariya 63 kwh versions carry a 7.4 kw charger for domestic use, while the 87 kwh has a 22 kw three-phase charger for home charging.
PROPILOT with Navi-link offers an enhanced experience from the acclaimed system first introduced with the LEAF. With the addition of road data and sensing technology, the system now offers a smoother ride by means of speed-adjustment.
The Ariya is also equipped with the latest in connectivity, including a new humanmachine interface and firmware for overthe-air updates. The range is expected to be launched in Europe next year but at this stage Nissan South Africa has yet confirm if it will be offered locally.
